Liver disease testing helps detect inflammation, fibrosis (scarring), or fat buildup in the liver—conditions that can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, or other serious complications. One of the most common findings is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) – formerly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), often discovered in people with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), commonly known as fatty liver disease, occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver. It is strongly associated with insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic health conditions.
Most cases of fatty liver disease are not related to alcohol use. Instead, they are driven by metabolic factors such as insulin resistance, weight gain, obesity, high blood sugar, and cholesterol abnormalities.
In many patients, fatty liver disease can improve or even resolve with weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, dietary changes, and medical management of underlying metabolic conditions. There is at least one medication approved for treating MASLD.
