At Texas Diabetes and Endocrinology, we are dedicated to advancing medical therapies through rigorous clinical research trials. Our research department aims to test new and promising treatments before they become widely available, providing a vital service to both the medical community and our patients.

What are clinical research trials?

Clinical research works to advance medical or device therapies by testing new and potential treatments before they are available to the public.

At TD&E, we offer many clinical research trials for patients to participate in if interested.

Our research goals at TD&E are to (1) help with the advancement of new therapies and devices, and (2) to improve a patient’s quality of life by offering new and alternative therapies to which they might not otherwise have access.

Here’s what you should know about voluntary participation in clinical research trials we offer at TD&E Research.

What is the benefit to the patient for participating in clinical research trials?

Clinical trials give patients an opportunity to help with the advancement of medications, devices, and innovative ways to treat different conditions and diseases. Participation in a clinical research trial also affords patients a unique opportunity to learn more about their condition and take an active role in their health.

Are all patients eligible to participate in TD&E clinical research trials?

Patients must first meet specific inclusion criteria to participate in a clinical trial.

What are the additional requirements for participating in a trial?

Clinical research trials often require additional procedures beyond what is included in your regular care such as more lab work (blood and urine samples), ECGs, questionnaires, dietician consultations, and visits with our clinical research team. Patients will be asked to keep in close contact with our office if they experience any medical or health issues associated with their new trial treatment.

How much time do research visits typically take?

Research visits can take approximately one to three hours depending on the type of visit and requirements needed for the study.

How long do research trials usually last?

The time period for clinical trials varies, but they can last anywhere from a singular, one-time visit up to five years depending on the data needed.

Is there a cost associated with participating in a clinical research trial at TD&E?

There is no cost to our patients for their participation, and most studies will compensate for the time and travel for completing required visits and procedures.

The WORST doctors office. Do not go here. My partner was seen and given a prescription almost two weeks ago, the doctor has failed to authorize the prescription and when they finally authorize, they do it incorrectly so the pharmacy can’t fill the script. Good luck calling, no one ever answers the phone and they’ve turned off voicemail capabilities. If you need any sort of regular medication do NOT choose this provider your health will suffer.

I can't review the doctor because their office policies are so terrible that you are told one thing by one person and another thing by someone else. A month ago I called to schedule an appt with Dr Harrison and was told I needed a referral, but a telehealth visit would be no problem, though I would have to wait until late August. OK, no problem. I called my primary care and had to wait a while for a telehealth. Finally got the referral and waited for a call that never came. Every time you call to schedule a new patient appointment it tells you to leave a message but says don't leave multiple message or it'll take longer. Well guess what? No one ever calls back. I finally decided to try the nurse's line after waiting 4 days. They were able to get someone in scheduling on the line. Then I'm told there's no referral in their system. Really? I log on to my primary care's patient portal and sure enough there's the referral, writting 5 days prior just like I said, and a confirmation that it was sent. Now I'm told I'll have to print it to a PDF, fill out their online appointment form and attach it before they can continue scheduling. I do so and we move forward. I explain that I would like a telehealth as my wife has a serious medical condition with surgery scheduled in less than 3 weeks and I can't risk contracting anything by being in office. Plus, there's hardly ever a reason to be in person with an endocronologist, especially when no tests or labs have even been ordered. I am told it doesn't matter what my situation is, their office policy is all new patients have to be in person and if I don't like it, perhaps this isn't the practice for me and I should find someone else. I asked if I could schedule the appointment and speak with Dr. Harrison's nurse to explain what's going on and see if they would be willing to accommodate. Nope. They refused to let me speak with anyone else and refused to even listen or understand the situation. They are more concerned with office policies than patient care. That's not how I want a relationship with a doctor to be, so I will be finding someone else.

I was referred here by my IM doctor but getting an appointment was near impossible. All my records and referral were sent over for review. I received a text stating someone would call to make an appointment in 48hrs, it’s now been one week and I haven’t heard back. I’ve called the office but I get put on hold over and over or sent to a new patient line that tells you to not leave a message if you have already requested an appointment. I called and requested to speak to an office manager but I get hung up on. In one day I was hung up on over 3 times. Not sure what the trick is but it’s just not worth it if it’s this hard to get an appointment.

My experience with this provider, especially Dr. Chen, was excellent. It doesn't take her long to explain what needs to happen, what the patient needs to do, in order to take good care of themselves. She isn't pushy, either. She just tells it like it is.

Cire, the scheduler for Dr. Harrison, was very helpful. She went over my insurance and referral in an efficient and professional manner. She also did not make me feel "rushed" which I appreciate.
